Quick answer
Two free UK tools add payments you already make to your credit file. CreditLadder reports rent to one credit reference agency for free, or to all three from the equivalent of £5 a month. Experian Boost adds Council Tax, savings and some subscriptions to your Experian file. Loqbox reports to all three agencies, but its homepage shows no prices, so it is not ranked.

With a credit-builder loan you repay money you only receive at the end. The cost is the interest and fees, not the payments themselves. Missed payments are reported too.
In the UK, a thin credit file is often a problem for renters, recent arrivals and young people, who pay bills reliably but have no borrowing on record. The tools here add payments you already make to your file, without borrowing.
We ranked tools by the yearly cost of their cheapest published option, using prices read from each provider's page on 29 October 2026. Tools without a published price are listed without a rank. The calculator above works out the cost of a credit-builder loan if you are considering one. See how we rank.
| Tool | What it reports | Agencies | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| CreditLadder | Rent | One free; all three paid | £0 (one agency) |

CreditLadder reports rent payments to "the big 3 credit reference agencies – Experian, Equifax & TransUnion". It does not collect your rent. Reporting to one agency is "currently free", and to all three "from the equivalent of £5/month". It is authorised by the FCA as a payment institution, registration 811994.
Experian Boost is free and counts payments into savings and investments, Council Tax, and digital subscriptions from a connected current account. It affects only Experian.
Loqbox lists Save, Grow, Rent and Coach products and reports to all three agencies, but its homepage gives no prices. It says some of its services are not regulated by the FCA.

UK credit-builder cards and loans involve borrowing and are outside this list for now. Our guide on how credit-builder loans work explains the cost of borrowing to build credit, the credit-builder cost calculator works it out, and the US comparison covers US loans and plans.

Questions
Can paying rent build my credit file in the UK?
Yes, if it is reported. CreditLadder reports rent payments to credit reference agencies without collecting the rent itself. Reporting to one agency is free, and reporting to Experian, Equifax and TransUnion costs from the equivalent of £5 a month, according to its homepage read on 29 October 2026.
What does Experian Boost count?
Experian’s page says it can count payments into savings and investments such as ISAs, Council Tax payments, and digital subscriptions such as Netflix, Spotify or Amazon Prime, from a current account you connect. It is free and affects only your Experian file, not Equifax or TransUnion.
Will these tools improve my credit score?
We cannot promise that, and neither can any provider. Lenders use different agencies and scoring, and a credit score is one input among many. Reporting regular payments can add positive history to a thin file. Missed rent or bills can be reported too where a tool reports them.
Why is Loqbox not ranked?
Loqbox’s homepage shows that it reports to Experian, TransUnion and Equifax, and lists Save, Grow and Rent products, but no prices. We rank only on prices read from the provider’s own page, so Loqbox is listed without a rank until its prices can be read.
Are credit-building firms regulated?
CreditLadder is authorised by the FCA as a payment institution, registration 811994. Loqbox Technology UK is FCA-authorised, FRN 694919, and Loqbox Finance UK, FRN 678579. Loqbox says some of its services are not regulated by the FCA. Check any firm on the FCA Register.
